Lagos State Government Approves Go-Girl Foundation’s Efforts to Empower Young Girls

The Lagos State government has endorsed the Go-Girl Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation, led by Chidimma Blessing Ekume, for its significant contributions to the empowerment of young girls through the Knowledge For Every Girl (K.E.G) initiative. This approval highlights the foundation’s role in addressing critical issues such as female advocacy, menstrual health education, and gender equality, areas that align with the state’s objectives for youth and women’s development.

The K.E.G initiative, which is a core program of the Go-Girl Foundation, has already reached over 2,000 girls in more than five schools across Eti-Osa, Lagos. The current campaign, under the theme “Now that I Have My Period, What Must I Know?“, provides much-needed education on menstrual health, personal hygiene, and how young girls can manage the physical and emotional changes they experience during adolescence. Additionally, the program addresses period poverty by distributing sanitary materials such as pads and wipes to ensure that no girl is left behind.

The program aims to provide proper knowledge of menstrual health, which is deemed invaluable to the development and well-being of the girl child. Some of the first set of approved schools the foundation has reached out include:

1. Badore Community Junior Secondary School, Ajah.
2. Lagos State Junior Model College, Badore, Ajah.
3. Olomu Community Junior Secondary School, Ajah.
4. Gbara Community Junior Secondary School, Lekki.
5. Ilasan Community Junior Secondary School, Lekki.

The Go-Girl Foundation will collaborate closely with school principals to schedule specific dates for the sensitization exercise. Chidimma Blessing Ekume, Founder of the Go-Girl Foundation, expressed her commitment to ensuring that young girls across Lagos are equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to navigate adolescence with confidence. “This program is a step towards empowering young girls to understand their bodies, manage the changes that come with menstruation, and break the silence surrounding menstrual health,” she said.

Chidimma, also expressed gratitude for the state’s support, stating, “The approval from Lagos State strengthens our resolve to continue empowering young girls across Nigeria. With this endorsement, we are motivated to expand our reach and introduce new topics like mental health, gender equality, and leadership development into our curriculum.” With this the foundation hopes to reach more states across Nigeria.

The foundation is not only focused on menstrual health but also addresses broader issues such as gender-based violence and female education. Through strategic partnerships with NGOs, health organizations, and corporate sponsors, the Go-Girl Foundation is working to ensure that these programs have a lasting and measurable impact.

The state’s approval comes as a testament to the foundation’s dedication to creating safe spaces for young girls to discuss issues that affect them and equipping them with the tools they need to succeed. The collaboration between the Go-Girl Foundation and Lagos State will also provide opportunities for scaling the initiative to reach more schools and communities in the future.
