An Exclusive Conversation with Dessy: The Musician and Creative Shaping the Sound of the Future
Q: You’ve been consistently working with artists on releasing music over the past few years. What inspires your creative process?
“My inspiration comes from a variety of sources. Sometimes it’s a specific emotion or experience, other times it’s a particular sound or melody that catches my ear. I’m constantly absorbing music, art, and culture, and these influences often seep into my work. Ultimately, I strive to create music that resonates with people on an emotional level.”
Q: What are some of your biggest musical achievements so far?
“One of my proudest moments was participating in the Music Business Academy for Africa program. It was a validation of my hard work and dedication. I’m also grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with talented artists and producers. These experiences have helped me grow as a musician and pushed me to explore new sonic territories.”
Q: How do you balance your songwriting, production, and live performance roles?
“It’s definitely a juggling act, but I’ve learned to manage my time effectively. I have a dedicated studio space where I can focus on songwriting and production. When it comes to organizing live performances, I enjoy the energy and scenery we create for the audiences. It’s a different kind of creative outlet that complements my studio work.”
Q: What can your fans expect from you in the future?
“I’m excited about the future and have a lot of new music in the pipeline. I’m constantly experimenting with different sounds and styles, and I’m eager to share these new projects with my fans. I’m also looking forward to touring more extensively and connecting with people on a deeper level through live performances.”
Q: How do you typically start a new song or production? Do you have a specific routine or method?
“I often start with a simple melody or chord progression, and then I build on it from there. Sometimes, I’ll start with a lyric or a specific feeling that I want to convey. I don’t have a strict routine, but I do find that having a dedicated workspace helps me focus.”
Q: What role does improvisation play in your creative process?
“Improvisation is a big part of my creative process. I often experiment with different sounds and rhythms, and I’ll record these improvisations to use as inspiration for new songs. It’s a great way to keep things fresh and spontaneous.”
Q: How do you overcome creative blocks or writer’s block?
“When I’m feeling stuck, I’ll take a break and do something else, like going for a walk or watching a movie. Sometimes, stepping away from the music can help me come back with a fresh perspective. I also find it helpful to collaborate with other musicians and producers.”
Q: What is your favorite part of the music production process?
“My favorite part of the production process is the mixing and mastering stage. It’s when everything comes together and the final product starts to take shape. I love the challenge of balancing all the different elements of a song and creating a cohesive sound.”
Q: Who are your biggest musical influences, both past and present?
“I’ve been influenced by a wide range of artists, like 2Face Idibia, Wande Coal, Burna Boy and Azadus to modern afrobeat producers like Sarz and Leriq. I’m also inspired by artists who push boundaries and challenge the status quo.”
Q: How has your musical taste evolved over time?
“My musical taste has evolved a lot over the years. I used to be more into heavy metal and punk rock, but now I’m drawn to more experimental and electronic music. I’m always open to discovering new sounds and genres.”
Q: Are there any specific genres or artists that you’re currently exploring or interested in?
“I’m really interested in the intersection of pure house music, afrobeats and hip-hop. I think there’s a lot of potential for innovation in that space. I’m also inspired by the work of artists like James Blake and Frank Ocean, who blend genres and create unique soundscapes.”
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
“Stay true to yourself and your artistic vision. Don’t be afraid to experiment and take risks. Most importantly, keep creating and never give up on your dreams. The music industry can be challenging, but with perseverance and passion, you can achieve your goals.”
