Widely addressed as the African Giant, Burna Boy featured on GQ Magazine’s Spring/Summer 2020 Issue. The ‘Anybody’ hitmaker granted an interview with a team from the magazine.
Burna Boy answered a few questions about himself as well as his music. He spoke about his rise and how far he wants to take his music to.
The Grammy-nominated singer shared how he feels being compared to Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti. According to the Port Harcourt born singer, “I don’t think anybody in their right mind would compare me to Fela,” he said.
He went on to also mention that he wouldn’t probably have a career if not for Fela.
“Fela is my inspiration and my childhood hero, so if you think comparing me to Fela is honorable, it’s actually not,” he states. “It actually makes me feel weird. Fela was Fela, and if it wasn’t for Fela, there probably wouldn’t be any me, so I don’t understand the comparison”, he said.
Burna Boy said he didn’t have an easy ride to stardom and where he is right now in his career. While others used an elevator to move upwards he had to go through the stairs.
“Unlike a lot of other people, I’ve had to go through never-ending steps to get here, whereas other people have taken the elevator up,” he remarked. So far that experience has been beneficial, “I’ve always been too heavy for that kind of elevator, so I had to take the stairs. Now I know every floor and everything on every floor” he added.
