It was October last year that Olamide welcomed Fireboy DML to his music imprint YBNL. The highly respected rapper gave the immensely talented young star a platform to blossom under his direct supervision and mentorship.
Things actually turned out better for Adedamola Adefolahan aka Fireboy DML than it did for the others who were signed during the same period. Perhaps Olamide sieved through the three signees and decided the singer would be a worthy investment, a decision he is actually proud of at the moment.
Just a little over a year since he joined YBNL, the 23-year-old released his debut album ‘Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps‘ – a 13-track body of work.
‘Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps’, bleeds love, feistiness of heart and freedom of mind. The singer showed an impressive effort in songwriting and vocalizing his lyrics. It not just an arrangement of selected songs each track arouses different feelings as you progress through each tune. You could be feeling like a hopeless romantic, a party freak and show killer and then someone high on life with bright prospects.
The first track ‘Need You’ is about the perfect track to begin this sonically pleasing journey. This record offers nothing less than an eargasm. Amazing instrumentation from Pheelz, the outtro being just orgasmic. ‘Vibration’ comes next and Fireboy ups his energy, he is really upbeat on the record as he lavishes encomium on the morphology of a female human being. The energy goes up times two on ‘Scatter’, the name of the track mirrors just what you expect from the song. It’s safe to say this would come off as another breakthrough single from the album.
Back to familiar sounds on ‘Jealous’, one thing about good music is that it is really ageless. It still feels good to hear those lyrics again. She likes his melodies and he likes her ‘Energy’, the singer continues to woo his prospective bae with his slick lyrics. The inaudible muttering complements the Pheelz produced beats. On ‘Like I Do’, Fireboy dare says ‘nobody can love you like I do, such a bold testament of love. He sings reassuringly, the emotion here is so contagious, *drops a tear*.
The next track ‘Gbas Gbos’ differs from the rest of the sounds so far heard as it is cut out from Fela’s type of Afrobeat. The sound might not be his forte but he did kill it regardless. A visual treatment is needed for this track, I can imagine the scenario already. ‘King’ was first released as a single, I still think this tune is so underrated. The melodies are smooth like a syrup, a gem on LTG. Then comes ‘Omo Ologo’, this beat should have been left for Olamide, best consider it the skit on the album. Fireboy resurrects on ‘High On Life’ full of positivity, that goodness continues on ‘Feel’.
‘What If I Say‘ is a song we love already from early release, as a lead single. Early release or not this record would still be a big success. Fireboy DML takes the sonic journey to a halt with ‘Wait and See’. Track 13 is a statement of self-belief, confidence and a promise of bigger things to come from him. Basically the artiste says haters, unbelievers , I really don’t care I will surpass your expectations, just wait and see!
Listening through the entire album, you can’t deny this is one of the finest album to drop in 2019. Fireboy DML is cut from a high grade fabric in terms of songwriting. His pen game is crazy and it’s not a hype or cliche. All things being equal, the YBNL singer would be around for a long time.
‘Laughter, Tears & Goosebumps’, has enormous replay value. From a personal perspective ‘Omo Ologo’ is the only weak link I could find on the album. Are you looking for some good piece of music to cushion you through life I recommend LTG. In 2019 only two or three Nigerian albums can top this.
Lastly, the production on the album is fantastic, big shout out to Pheelz and the other guys.
